Unnecessary wetness
Sun Singer's chronicle #2 (06/30/96)
Recently I was told a very strange rumor by people of my tribe dealing in
Celik. They said that many adventurers and traders reported to have been
caught in the middle of continuous rainfalls on the road going to Celik
from Balic, something that has not happened for many years in these regions.
It was apparently not a destructive Tyr-storm like everyone should expect,
but rather refreshing showers of cool rain without deafening thunder and
flashing lightning.
"Lies, I told myself, it can only be lies. How can the sun my master
be that weak to allow the presence of rain to cover his magnificence? It
is just impossible." But I was still curious, and I decided to run
to Balic the next day. One never knows, maybe all the rumors were true and
if it was the case, I had to intervene in the name of the sun.
After praying and singing at the rise of my master, I left the filthy town
of Celik with all better spells the sun can bestow me in my mind. The day
progressed and I was still running under the blessing rays of the sun without
having any hint that it was raining around here the day before. I nonetheless
continued my run toward Balic, almost convinced that people made up this
rain story just to be interesting. Anyway, running to Balic is never an
empty trip; with all the events occuring in this city with its silt harbor
and the fights between the three major trading houses, there is always plenty
of action to witness.
Talking about silt, I was just passing along the southern tip of the Estuary
of the Forked Tongue when I saw the unbelievable: dark clouds. About 5 miles
ahead it was actually raining, at my complete astonishment. I ran the faster
I could to reach the cloudy area and when I got there, I became astonished
further. There was a female elf dancing under the falling water! At the
same moment, the wetness of the air filled my lungs and covered my skin,
making me suffer. I recovered my senses, realizing the sun was no longer
filling the sky with its greatness, and took a look at this woman I had
never seen. She was graceful and lean with long silver hair, dressed with
a short black and yellow gown, but her skin was of a pale-blue hue, contrasting
with her otherwise great beauty. Apparently unaware of my presence, she
was dancing continuously under the rain and looked actually happy! I concluded
this elf was insane and I decided to cast blistering rays on her
to wake her up of her trance. As the ray of the sun pierced the clouds and
came upon her, she screamed like I had gated down a sunray on her.
In panic, she fell to the ground and began to huddle, looking around. As
her eyes finally locked on me, her expression changed drastically and she
instantly got on her feet and ran toward the mountains. She sort of recognized
me I think. As I was standing there still perplex, the clouds dissipated
and my master the sun took its rightful place in the skies, drying me as
I basked myself under its caressing rays.
It is then I realized who or what I had met. The girl was probably a rain
cleric, a devoted priest to the more pitiful of all the elements. I do not
understand what power she could find in rain. Maybe I should have run after
her to kill her, but though she would surely deserve to die for worshipping
such an abomination, I think there is certainly something interesting to
know about this elven woman. Moreover, it is not everyday that you meet
with your opposite.
Well, for now, I will see tomorrow if there is something new in Balic.
